Smaller Solutions – A Guide to Downsizing

For most of us, moving isn’t a one-time thing. So, with so many different shapes and sizes in the property market, it’s likely that we’ll have to move into a smaller space at one time or another. As you would expect, this can come with some difficult concessions, as the setup of a larger space may not necessarily translate well into our new dwelling.

At Hire a Mover, we are dedicated to providing you with a seamless, stress-free moving experience. So, if you’re preparing for a transition into a smaller space, here’s our guide to downsizing before a move!

Plan and Prepare

It’s hard to work out an exact plan of attack without first going through your new property and taking note of the space you’re going to be fulling. As you do this, make sure that you pay close attention to storage areas, as well as “necessity rooms”, such as the kitchen and laundry. By figuring out the basics of what has to come with you, while also mapping out where they will be placed, you can start to map out how much space you have for everything else.

If you get the chance, it’s a good idea to measure items like your couch, washer and dryer, appliances etc. That way, you will have a more thorough idea of how to best utilise your new space. Once you’ve worked out what can fit into your new home, it’s time to work out what doesn’t.

Handling Items That Won’t Fit

This is the hard part of the process. When it comes to items in our home, it’s easy to get sentimental about the smallest things, so parting with items can be difficult. However, the pain of parting with your possessions is well worth it when compared to the idea of living in an inherently cluttered environment. So, it’s time to work out where these things go.

For things that you can’t bring yourself to part with, storage may be a viable option. While hiring out a storage space can be quite expensive (depending on the amount of space required), it will ensure that your cherished possessions are relatively safe and secure until a time when you have enough space to reclaim them. Alternatively, if you can’t bring yourself to throw certain things away, donating them is a fantastic way to offer them a second life with someone else.

The same can also be said with selling items with services like Gumtree and eBay. The downside of selling when compared to donating is the amount of time and effort that goes into finding buyers and shipping items, if required. Preparing for a move can be quite stressful and time-consuming in and of itself, so many people avoid the selling route to avoid adding extra hassle to their experience.

Buy Functional Furnishings

When you’re moving into a smaller space, every little bit of storage you can find is valuable. So, why not make sure that your home is optimised for this? There is a wide array of furniture options on the market that offer inbuilt storage, including beds, desks, coffee tables, and many more. These little changes will allow you to declutter your environment in a stylish and unobtrusive way; making them a perfect choice for those that have a lot of bits and bobs laying around.
